The Astonishing Meteora Rocks in Greece

To be completely honest, this trip from Athens to the giant rocks of Meteora blew my mind! The Greek word Meteora means "suspended in the air" and my first impression was that the view looked something like a film set from the Avatar movie!!! Aside from the spectacular sight of these rocks rising from the plains of Thessaly in Central Greece, there are a number of Greek Orthodox monasteries perched on the summits and, today, six of these monasteries are still active. The oldest of these monasteries, the Holy Monastery of Great Mateoron, dates back to around 1340. It is well worth planning a full day to take in these amazing sights and due to their huge pilgrimage attraction and general tourist appeal, its is best to avoid weekend visiting times.
