Colder weather as we arrive in Krakow, Poland

As we moved north across Europe from Budapest and Prague and onto Krakow, we have seen a noticeable fall in temperatures, though we have been quite fortunate with some sunny days. We had read that Krakow had much to offer for tourists and we have not been disappointed. Staying in an apartment close to Wawel Castle and only a short walk to the Old Town Square, there has been plenty of sites to admire.
The square is dominated by two significant landmarks - the Cloth Hall in the centre and the impressive St Mary's Church. One of the main attractions in Krakow are the horse & carriage tours, where you can enjoy an impressive overview of the city sites. Wawel Royal Castle including the Archcathedral and the numerous towers dominate the skyline and is definitely worth a visit.
Apart from walking the main streets of Krakow and sampling the local cuisine, we also decided to go on two local tours;
(a) To see the historic Salt Mine at Wieliczka, where you can see the effects of almost 9 centuries of underground mining of salt, which reaches depths of more than 300 metres. The mine is about a 30 minutes drive from Krakow.
(b) A visit to Auschwitz Concentration Camp (about 90 minutes drive away). A very moving and disturbing experience - see my separate blog, where I have also provided a selection of photographs.
